“旧约和新约的圣经”，最早出现在14世纪初，源自盎格鲁-拉丁语的 biblia，古法语的 bible（13世纪）意为“圣经”，也指任何大型书籍。这个词来自中世纪和晚期拉丁语的 biblia，原本是指“圣经”，其语法为中性复数，但被理解为阴性单数。它源自短语 biblia sacra，意为“圣书”，是希腊语 ta biblia to hagia（“圣书”）的翻译。拉丁语中的这个词又来源于希腊语 biblion，意为“纸张，卷轴”，同时也是“书籍”的普通表达，尤其是指较大作品中的章节；参见 biblio-。
基督教经典在希腊语中早在公元223年就被称为 Ta Biblia。Bible 逐渐取代了古英语中的 biblioðece（参见 bibliothec），成为“圣经”的常用词。其引申义“任何权威书籍”出现在1804年。Bible-thumper（“热衷于圣经的人”）一词则出现在1870年，指的是那些严格遵循基督教教义的人。Bible belt 这个词则是指美国南部地区，1926年首次出现，通常被认为是由H.L. Mencken创造的，形容当时该地区被基要主义基督徒主导的地带。
