nitrous 的词源

大约在1600年，nitrosus这个词开始被用来表示“与硝酸盐有关的，含硝酸盐的”，它源自拉丁语的nitrum（参见nitre）。在化学中，这个词的更精确用法出现在1780年代，专门指那些氮的价态低于相应nitric化合物的化合物。在中世纪英语中，nitrose一词曾用来形容“硝酸盐特性；苦的，酸的”，大约在15世纪。Nitrous oxide，也就是我们熟知的“笑气”，首次被记录是在1800年。

When inhaled it produces unconsciousness and insensibility to pain; hence it is used as an anesthetic during short surgical operations.
