provincialism 的词源

1820年起，provincial（省级的）与-ism（主义）结合，政治上指“地方依恋，与国家统一相对立”。到1836年，这个词的含义扩展为“某种狭隘的地方主义思维或兴趣；缺乏教养或开明”，反映了某个省份或一般省份的风俗或习惯（与大城市或首都相对）。而“地方特有的词汇或用法”这一意思则早在1770年就已出现。
