deep six 的词源

“被丢弃的地方”，这个说法在1921年出现（如短语give (something) the deep six），最初源于摩托艇术语，可能来自早期黑社会用语中“坟墓”的意思（1929年），这可能与坟墓通常深六英尺的说法有关。不过，这个短语（与mark twain类似）也出现在航海术语中，用于测水深，表示六寻：
