“神话”这个词最早出现在1830年，源自法语 mythe（1818年）和现代拉丁语 mythus，而这些又直接借自希腊语 mythos。在希腊语中，这个词的意思是“言语、思想、话语、交谈；故事、传奇、神话，任何通过口头传递的东西”，其具体来源尚不明确。有学者如比克斯（Beekes）认为，这个词“很可能是前希腊语的遗留。”
