Burma 的词源

这是缅甸的一个旧称，也是当地人对这个国家的称呼。1989年，缅甸的军政府正式选择了这个名称。改变名称的理由包括摆脱殖民遗留问题，或是淡化与缅族主要民族的联系。

1823年作为形容词使用，意指“与缅甸有关”；1824年作为名词，指“缅甸的本地人或居民”，来源于Burma（缅甸）+ -ese（后缀）。而Burman（缅甸人）则较早，1800年作为名词，1802年作为形容词。Burmese cat（缅甸猫）则可以追溯到1939年。
