alehouse 的词源

In the fifteenth century, and until the seventeenth, ale stood for the unhopped fermented malt liquor which had long been the native drink of these islands. By the eighteenth century, however, all malt liquor was hopped and there had been a silent mutation in the meaning of the two terms. For a time the terms became synonymous, in fact, but local habits of nomenclature still continued to perpetuate what had been a real difference: 'beer' was the malt liquor which tended to be found in towns, 'ale' was the term in general use in the country districts. 古英语 hus "居住地，庇护所，设计用作居住的建筑"，来自原始日耳曼语 *hūsan（古诺尔斯语、古弗里西亚语 hus，荷兰语 huis，德语 Haus 也是如此），起源不明，可能与 hide (v.) 的词根有关 [OED]。在哥特语中仅用于 gudhus "神庙"，字面意思是 "神之屋"；哥特语中表示 "房屋" 的常用词为 razn。
