diphtheria 的词源

白喉，这种传染病在过去常常致命。1857年，这个词源自法语 diphthérie，由医生皮埃尔·布雷顿诺（Pierre Bretonneau，1778-1862）于1855年创造，源自希腊语 diphthera，意为“处理过的皮革”，具体来源不明。之所以称这种病为白喉，是因为它会在喉咙中形成一种坚硬的膜。
