到1830年，在“为某人或某情况量身定制”这一比喻意义上使用，通常带有轻蔑意味。

也许是基于当代对“为人定制外衣”的裁缝的概念，与为销售而制作成品的 clothier 相对。但这个表达可能也得益于莎士比亚：
