“斜纹棉布”，15世纪中期，Geayne，是Gene fustian的缩写，源自法语jean fustian，意为“热那亚（Genoa）产的斜纹棉布”，热那亚是意大利的一座城市，古法语称为Jannes，拉丁语则是Genua（参见Genoa）。可以与已废弃的jane进行比较，后者是指一种在15世纪流通于英格兰的小银币，产自热那亚。复数形式jeans到19世纪中期已成为标准用法。在“牛仔裤”的意义上，该词最早出现在1908年，并于1959年被认为是青少年的标志性服装。最初并非蓝色。
