convent 的词源

“女巫聚会”，1660年代，早期指“会议、集会、集合”（约公元1500年）；是covent、cuvent的变体，源自古法语covent, convent，再追溯到拉丁语conventus（参见convent）。

Covent（13世纪）也指“修道院或 convent 中的一群男女”。这种变体形式以及将该拼写与女巫联系起来的用法起源于苏格兰，但直到沃尔特·斯科特在《恶魔学与女巫学书信集》（1830年）中使用这一意义时才被广泛传播。
