normalcy 的词源

1857年，normal + -cy，指“处于直角的数学状态，几何上的正常状态或事实”。自1920年以来，这个词与美国总统沃伦·哈丁（Warren G. Harding）联系在一起，因为他在那年以“回归正常cy”（Return to Normalcy）为口号竞选，意指一战前的状态。之前，normalcy主要用于数学意义上，而更纯粹的表达“正常情况”是normality。哈丁的用词在他任内被嘲笑，被视为他语言能力不足的例证（民主党政治家威廉·G·麦卡杜（William G. McAdoo Jr.）称哈丁的演讲是“一支寻找思想的华丽辞藻大军”）。
