古英语 frogga “青蛙”，是 frosc, forsc, frox “青蛙”的 diminutive 形式，属于普通日耳曼语词，但其不同的构成形式难以解释（同源词：古诺尔斯语 froskr，中荷兰语 vorsc，德语 Frosch “青蛙”），可能字面意思是“跳跃者”（如果来自原始印欧语词根 *preu- “跳跃”，也源自梵语 provate “跳跃”，俄语 prygat “跳跃，跳”。沃特金斯称古英语 -gga 为“模糊的表达后缀”。
拉丁语词（rana）模仿了呱呱声。在中古英语中也作 frok, vrogge, frugge，有时复数形式 froggen。并行的中古英语形式 frude, froud 来自古诺尔斯语 frauðr “青蛙”，本土替代形式 frosk “青蛙”在英语方言中存活至19世纪。
