arbour 的词源

大约在公元1300年，herber这个词出现，意思是“草药花园，乐园”，源自古法语的erbier，意指“田野，草地；菜园”。这个词又源于拉丁语的herba，意思是“草，草药”（参见herb）。后来，这个词的意思扩展为“草地” （14世纪中期，这个意思在古法语中也有体现），以及“树木、灌木或藤蔓交织而成的阴凉角落，凉亭”（14世纪中期）。虽然它可能与拉丁语的arbor（意为“树”，参见arbor (n.2)）无关，但这个词或许在拼写上受到了影响：

不过，在中英语中，从er-到ar-的变化也反映了发音的演变。可以对比一下farm（来自ferme）和harbor（来自古英语herebeorg）。

这个词缀用于构成表示质量、状态或条件的名词，源自中古英语的 -our，来自古法语的 -our（现代法语为 -eur），再往前追溯则是拉丁语的 -orem（主格为 -or），通常加在过去分词动词词干后。有时也源自拉丁语的 -atorem（主格 -ator）。

在美国，通过诺亚·韦伯斯特的影响，几乎所有情况下都使用 -or（但在 glamour 中例外），而在英国，大多数情况下则使用 -our（不过也有不少例外，如 author, error, tenor, senator, ancestor, horror 等）。大约公元1300年后，-our 形式开始占据主导地位，但门肯（H. L. Mencken）指出，莎士比亚前三本剧作集中的拼写是混用且频率相当的；直到1685年出版的《第四本剧作集》才开始统一使用 -our。

从16世纪起，模仿拉丁语的 -or 形式在某种程度上复兴（如 governour 在16世纪开始逐渐去掉 -u-，到19世纪完全消失），同时也受到英美两国语音拼写者的影响（约翰·韦斯利在1791年写道，-or 在英国是“一种时髦的错误”）。

韦伯斯特在1783年出版的第一本拼写书《英语语法基础》（通常被称为《蓝黑拼写书》）中批评了在 -our 词中去掉 -u- 的习惯。他自己从1804年修订版开始逐渐去掉 -u-，并在1806年出版的《英语综合词典》中正式确立了这一拼写规则。这本词典还在美国推广了 -ic 代替英式的 -ick，以及 -er 代替 -re，并尝试了一些其他的拼写改革，但大多数都没有流行开来（比如 masheen 代替 machine）。他试图通过词源和大作家的习惯来为这些改革辩护，但并没有说服力。

福勒指出，英国人在构成以 -orous 结尾的形容词（如 humorous）以及 -ation 和 -ize 派生词时，会去掉 -u-，这在一定程度上尊重了拉丁语的词源（如 vaporize）。然而，当美国人开始一致采用一种拼写时，英国人却反而更加坚持自己的拼写规则。福勒认为，“美国在 honour 和 favour 等词中去掉 -our，可能在某种程度上阻碍了英语朝着同一方向的发展。”
