cottage 的词源

14世纪晚期，cottage 指的是“一个小屋，一个简陋的居所”，通常是农劳者的住所。这个词源自古法语的 cote，意为“茅屋，小屋”，加上盎格鲁法语的后缀 -age（根据《牛津英语词典》，整体意思可能是“附属于小屋的全部财产”）。古法语的 cot 可能源自古斯堪的纳维亚语的 kot，意为“小屋”，与古英语的 cot 和 cote（均意为“乡村小屋”或“茅屋”）同源，进一步追溯可至原始日耳曼语的 *kutan（同源词还包括中荷兰语的 cot 和现代荷兰语的 kot）。
