14世纪早期，female，femele，“女性，能够生育后代的人类”，来自古法语femelle“女性，雌性”（12世纪），源自中世纪拉丁语femella“雌性”，来自拉丁语femella“年轻雌性，女孩”，是femina“女性，雌性”的 diminutive（“女性，雌性”，字面意思是“哺乳的她”，来自原始印欧语根*dhe(i)-“吸吮”）。
在通俗拉丁语中的意义从年轻人类扩展到其他动物的雌性，后来普遍指雌性。比较拉丁语masculus，也是一个diminutive（参见masculine）。拼写femele是词源性的，但在中英语中，该词因错误模仿无关的male而被改变。
在现代用法中通常是形容词（在这种用法中，早在14世纪就有证据）。从1660年代起，指带有插座及相应部件的工具。
