self-restraint 的词源

“抑制（行动或动作）；约束、阻碍”，早在15世纪，restreinte，源自古法语 restreinte，是名词用法，来自女性过去分词 restraindre（参见 restrain）。

1829年起，特别用于指代难以驯服的囚犯或危险的精神病患者。约1600年时，“克制，抑制奢华的举止或风格”这一含义开始出现。短语 restraint of trade 则出现在1630年代。

《牛津英语词典》统计古英语中有13个这样的复合词。《中古英语词典》列出了四个，其中将 self-will 视为一个整体。到了16世纪中期，这个词素重新活跃起来，“很可能是受到希腊语复合词（如 auto-）的模仿或回忆影响”，并在17世纪的小册子争论中创造了大量新词。
