shire 的词源

14世纪中期，“一个郡，国家或州的政治和行政划分”，来自盎格鲁-法语counte，源自晚期拉丁语comitatus“伯爵的管辖权”，来自拉丁语comes（参见count (n.1)）。它取代了古英语scir“郡”。

1086年，Cestre Scire，来自Chester + scir（意为“地区”，参见shire）。Cheshire cat及其著名的微笑可以追溯到1770年，但其具体含义仍然模糊。
