约公元1300年，vengeaunce，“报复，惩罚，复仇”，来自盎格鲁法语vengeaunce，古法语vengeance，venjance“复仇，报复”（12世纪），源自vengier“复仇”，来自拉丁语vindicare“主张权利，声称为己有；报仇，惩罚”（参见vindicate）。替代形式vengement自14世纪中期起被记录。
