community 的词源

14世纪晚期，“一群因居住在同一地区而联系在一起的人”，也指“平民百姓”（非统治者或 clergy），这个词源于古法语 comunité，意为“社区、共同体、大家”（现代法语为 communauté）。它又源自拉丁语 communitatem（主格为 communitas），意指“社区、社会、友谊、亲密关系；礼貌、谦恭、和蔼可亲”。拉丁语中的 communis 则表示“共同的、公共的、普遍的，大家共享的”（参见 common (adj.)）。

古英语中表示“社区”的词是 gemænscipe，意为“社区、友谊、联合、共同拥有”。它源自 mæne，意为“共同的、公共的、普遍的”，因此可能与 communis 具有相同的原始印欧词根。中英语中还有一个词 commonty（14世纪晚期）指“平民百姓；一个社区”，后来也指“公有土地”（约1600年）。

在美国英语中，Community service 作为一种刑事判决形式记录于1972年。Community college, 指的是提供针对当地需求和兴趣的高等教育课程的学院，首次出现于1947年。Community chest，意为“由个人捐款组成的基金，用于满足社区内慈善和社会福利的需求”，则起源于1919年。
