primary 的词源

在15世纪初，primarie这个词的意思是“最早的，最基本的，时间或顺序上的首位”。到了1560年代，它又被用来表示“首位的或最高级别的，最重要的”。这个词源于拉丁语的primarius，意思是“第一等级的，首要的，主要的，优秀的”，而primus则意为“第一”。（参见prime (adj.)）

大约在1800年，这个词又被赋予了“在生长或发展顺序中首位或最低的；基础的，预备的”这一新含义，特别是在教育领域。primary school（小学）这一说法最早出现在1793年，源自法语的école primaire。

Primary color（原色）这一说法可以追溯到1610年代（最初指光谱中的七种颜色，后来指可以混合出其他颜色的三种基本颜料）。相关词汇还有Primarily。

Primary和prime都表示“时间上的首位”，现在尤其指“重要性上的首位”。例如：primary class（主要课程），primary definition（首要定义），primary consideration（首要考虑），primary planet（主要行星）；而prime则用于prime mover（原动力），prime importance（首要重要性），prime idea（主要思想）等。……Primitive指的是“属于起源或最初阶段的，原始的”，因此也可以引申为“过时的，具有老式简单特征的”。例如：primitive word（原始词汇），the primitive church（原始教会），primitive purity（原始纯洁），primitive manners（原始礼仪），primitive unconventionality（原始不拘一格），primitive dress（原始服饰）。……Primeval则专指“最早期的或原始的”，没有其他含义。[《世纪词典》]

1760年，“在排名或重要性上处于首位或最高的事物”；参见 primary（形容词）。“在选举区内，同一政党的选民会议，用于提名候选人或代表大会代表”的含义出现在1855年，是美式英语，源自 primary meeting（1823年）、primary election（1792年，指法国；在美国语境中从1835年起使用）或 primary caucus（1817年）。这一制度并非正式宪法规定，而是随着时间演变而来的。
