stillborn 的词源

古英语中有一个词 boren，这是动词 beran 的另一种过去分词形式（可以参见 bear (v.)）。在中古英语中，许多动词的过去分词结尾 -en 常常会省略其中的 -e-，尤其是在元音、 -r- 和 -l- 后面。这也是为什么我们会看到 slain 这样的形式。中古英语中有 stoln 这样的例子。根据《牛津英语词典》的说法，“在现代英语中，人们不再感觉到这个词与 bear 的联系；短语 to be born 几乎变成了一个不及物动词。”

这个词在14世纪初期就开始被使用，意思是“从出生起就具备某种特质或品质”（例如 born poet，born loser 等）。到了1710年，它又被用来表示“天生的，遗传的”。而口语表达 in (one's) born days（意为“在某人的一生中”）则出现在1742年。17世纪时，born 和 borne（参见相关条目）之间的区别开始显现。

古英语 stille “静止的，稳定的，固定的，静态的”，来自原始日耳曼语 *stilli-（也源自古弗里西亚语，中低德语，中荷兰语 stille，荷兰语 stil，古高德语 stilli，德语 still），来自原始印欧语根 *stel- “放置，站立，整理”的后缀形式，衍生词指代静止的物体或地方。

“安静，平静，温和，沉默”的意义在后期古英语中出现。从1722年起用作连词。提到孩子时，在 stillborn 等词中委婉地表示“死去”。Still small voice 来自《钦定版圣经》：
