velocipede 的词源

这个词最早出现在1868年，由前缀 bi-（意为“二”）和拉丁化的希腊词 kyklos（意为“圆圈，轮子”，参见 cycle (n.)）组合而成，模仿了 tricycle（三轮车）的构词方式。这个词和对应的交通工具逐渐取代了早期的 velocipede（踏板车）。

The velocipede of 1869 was worked by treadles operating cranks on the axle oi the front wheel. 早在15世纪初（Chauliac），velocite一词就出现了，意为“迅速、快速的运动、速度”。这个词源自拉丁语的velocitatem（主格为velocitas），意指“敏捷、速度”。而拉丁语中的velox（属格为velocis）则表示“迅速、快速、敏捷”。这个词的起源尚不明确，可能与vehere（意为“携带”）有关，源自原始印欧语词根*wegh-（意为“走、移动、用车辆运输”），或者来自原始印欧语词根*weg-（意为“强壮、活泼”）的后缀形式。在物理学中，velocite更精确的含义是指相对运动速率，这一用法出现在1650年代。
