welterweight 的词源

中英语 weght，源自古英语 wiht，gewiht “重量，物体的下压力，物理性质的重性”，来自原始日耳曼语 *wihti-（也源自古诺尔斯语 vætt，丹麦语 vegt，古弗里西语 wicht，中古荷兰语 gewicht，德语 Gewicht），来自 *weg-（参见 weigh）。

到14世纪中期，作为“因其重量而使用的金属块”（fishing-weight，等）。“负担”的比喻意义出现在14世纪晚期。1510年代开始指钟表的配重。
