“船的左侧”（从船尾向前看），1540年代，可能源于“面向港口的一侧”（当船停靠时）；因此与port（名词1）相关。在古老的船只上，舵桨通常在右侧，因此它们会在另一侧靠岸。为了避免与starboard混淆，这个词在日常使用中取代了larboard；1844年海军部正式命令如此，1846年美国海军部也发布了通知。从1857年起作为形容词使用。
