tunnel 的词源

15世纪初，tonnel, tonel，意为“鸟类被引诱的漏斗形金属网”，来自古法语tonel, tonnelle“网”，是古法语tonne“桶，液体容器”的 diminutive 形式，可能与古英语tunne（参见tun）来自同一来源。

“管，管道”的意义（1540年代）在英语中发展，并导致了“地下通道，河床下的通道或（后来）铁路隧道”的意义（1660年代）。这个意义随后被借用到法语中（1878年）。早期的本土词是mine (n.)。

“动物的洞穴”，特别是指长且曲折的洞穴，始于1873年。Tunnel vision的证据可追溯至1912年。游乐园中的tunnel of love证据可追溯至1911年（指纽约的露娜公园）。
