Beatles 的词源

古英语 beatan 意为“施加打击，重复打击，痛打”（第七类强动词；过去式 beot，过去分词 beaten），源自原始日耳曼语 *bautan（古诺尔斯语 bauta，古高地德语 bozan 皆意为“打击”），来自印欧语根 *bhau- 意为“打击”。

过去式 beat 约出现于1500年，可能不是源自古英语，而是中世纪英语 beted 的简化。关于心脏的用法，约在1200年，源自其撞击胸膛的概念。

“在比赛中战胜”的意思始于1610年代（因此在beat the charges 等中有“合法避免，逃避”的意义，证明于1920年左右的黑市俚语）。“对…智力或身体上过于困难”的意义（到1870年）是短语 beats me 的背景。

“敲打覆盖物以惊动或驱赶猎物”（约1400年）的意义是 beat around (or about) the bush（1570年代）的来源，其隐喻意义从“进行初步动作”转变为“避免，逃避”。海 nautical 意义为“通过交替航向逆风前进”始于1670年代。命令 beat it 意为“离开”记录于1906年（尽管“脚在地面上的动作”是古英语 betan 的一个意义）；在1903年作为新闻男孩俚语，被证明意为“通过骑在火车外侧不付款旅行”。

Fans lined up all day on Argyll Street outside the Palladium for a glimpse of the boys, a phenomenon that was unprecedented at that time.
