superior 的词源

14世纪晚期，“位置更高”，来自古法语 superior “更高，上层”（现代法语 superieur），源自拉丁语 superiorem（主格 superior）“更高”，是 superus “位于上方，上层”的比较级，来自 super “在上方，超过”（源自PIE词根 *uper “在上方”）。

“更高的等级或尊严”的意义自15世纪晚期起被证实；“更高性质或特征”的意义自1530年代起被证实。在古代土地名称中，“更北”（14世纪晚期），但有时也指更高的海拔（德国），源自拉丁语对 superior 的用法。

原始意义在法语中保留得更强（如在 les étages supérieur “上层楼层”中），以及在 Lake Superior中，法语 Lac Supérieur 的借译，字面意思是“上层湖”（在海平面上600英尺，五大湖中具有最高的水面海拔，并且是最北的）。
