meiosis 的词源

在生物学中，“细胞核的分裂”，这个词最早出现在1905年，源自希腊语 meiosis，意思是“减少”，进一步追溯则是 meioun（减少）、meion（更少），最终可追溯到原始印欧语词根 *mei- (2)（小的）。

在此之前（1580年代），这个词被用作修辞术语，指一种表达方式，即“用弱或否定的表达来传达积极而有力的意思，从而使其更加强调”。比如说“不错”其实是指“非常好”，或者“我不介意”实际上是“我真的很想要”。马克·吐温在他的作品中也有类似的例子：
