vigilante 的词源

“警戒委员会成员”，1856年，美国英语，来自西班牙语vigilante，字面意思是“守望者”，源自拉丁语vigilantem（主格vigilans）“警惕的，焦虑的，小心的”，来自vigil“警惕的，清醒的”（参见vigil）。

1824年在密苏里州背景下证明了Vigilant man具有相同意义。Vigilance committees在美国边疆或其他官方权威不完善的地方维持非正式的粗略秩序。警戒委员会在1804年也在宾夕法尼亚州和其他州被证明存在，由当地政党任命，以在选举日召集选民。
